UDAIPUR – CHITTORGARH

Chittorgarh Fort – The Major Attractions

 The fort stands on a 180 mt high hill and spread over an area of 240 hectares that rises rapidly from the base point. It offers an overlooking view of the town of Chittorgarh. The fort is almost 5 km long and 1 km wide and is accessible only by seven huge gates.  

The fort was sacked and ruined three times by Mughal Emperors. It was sacked for the first time in 1300 by then emperor of Delhi, Allauddin Khiliji who said to be overwhelmed by the beauty of Queen Padmini. The fort was again sacked by Sultan Bahadur Shah in 1535 and third time by the Mughal Emperor Akabar in 1567.  

In 1535 Bahadur Shah the Sultan of Gujarat besieged the fort causing immense carnage and it is said that 32000 men donned the saffron robes of martyrdom and rode out to face a certain death, and the women folkes committed Jauhar (an act of self immolations by plunging in a large fire) led by Rani Karnawati.  

The prime attractions of the fort and within are its towers & temples like Kalikamata Temple, Vijay Stambh – the victory tower, Kirtistambh – the tower of pride, and the Padmini Mahal. Chittorgarh Fort has a historical importance & is known as the pride of Rajputs.  

The fort is open daily 07:00 AM to 18:00 PM

Other attractions within Chittorgarh Fort

The Vijay Stambh (Victory Tower) – Chittaurgarh Fort 

One of the major attractions of all in Chittorgarh fort constructed between 1458 and 1468 by Maharaja Kumbha to commemorate his victory over Mahmud Shah I Khalji. It is 36 metres high, made of yellow sandstone and intricately carved with gods and goddesses. Other astonishing things near by are many temples, mansions and cenotaphs set in the garden. 

Padminis Palace – Chittorgarh Fort 

Where it is believed that Alauddin Khilji was permitted to look at her through a mirror, which made him strongly infatuated and determined to possess her. 

Kirti Stambha (Tower of Fame) Chittorgarh Fort 

It can be visited on the way back along the road – Kirti Stambh (Tower of Fame), which is a seven stories high and dedicated to Lord Adinath (Jain Tirthankaras). The image of Adinath is carved all over the tower making it remarkable. 

RETURN TO UDAIPUR

After finishing the sightseeing of Chittorgarh Fort along with other attractions. Drive back to Udaipur.
