AGRA day trip
Visiting Taj Mahal
Taj Mahal, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, stands majestically on the banks of the Yamuna River and is considered one of the most stunning edifices ever constructed. The Mughal emperor Shah Jahan initiated the construction of this Marble marvel in 1631, and it took 22 years and 20,000 workers to complete it in 1653. The intricate marble work was adorned with precious and semi-precious stones, which were meticulously placed to create a masterpiece. The marble was sourced from Makarna, near Jodhpur in Rajasthan, in the 16th century, and every detail of the monument was carefully planned and executed. Taj Mahal is often referred to as the Monument of Love, and its symmetry is truly breathtaking. It is awe-inspiring to imagine how such an incredible wonder was erected without the use of modern engineering tools and technology.
After Taj Mahal, the next attraction on a day trip to Agra is the Red Fort.
VISIT AGRA FORT
Mughal Emperor Akbar commissioned the construction of this grand fort between 1565 to 1573 on the western bank of the Yamuna River, located to the northwest of the iconic Taj Mahal. The fort is made of red sandstone and was initially known as the walled city. Legend has it that Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan was confined and detained by his son Aurangzeb in the fort, where he spent the last eight years of his life gazing at the Taj Mahal. Agra fort is renowned for its magnificent ramparts and remarkable architecture, and it has been honored as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
ITIMAD – UD – DAULAH TOMB
After enjoying a delicious lunch, you can visit the stunning tomb of the emperor Jehangir’s chief minister and father-in-law, which is commonly known as the ‘Baby Taj’ due to its resemblance to the iconic Taj Mahal. Often referred to as a “jewel box” and sometimes called the “Baby Taj”, the tomb of I’timad-ud-Daulah is considered a preliminary version of the Taj Mahal. The complex includes various outbuildings and gardens, and the tomb itself, constructed between 1622 and 1628, marks the transition from the initial phase of monumental Mughal architecture, which was primarily constructed from red sandstone with marble embellishments. The mausoleum was commissioned by Nur Jahan, the wife of Jahangir, in memory of her father, Mirza Ghiyas Beg, who was originally a Persian Amir in exile.
VISIT FATEHPUR SIKIRI
Located 40 km from Agra, Fatehpur Sikri is renowned as the “Ghost City” or “Abandoned City”. It was constructed by Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1570 in honor of the Sufi saint Shaikh Salim Chisti. Despite taking 15 years to build, the emperor had to abandon the city due to a lack of water and its proximity to the Rajput province. Fatehpur Sikri is an imperial city created by the Mughal Emperor Akbar, and its architectural magnificence is beyond words. To truly appreciate the grandeur of its magnificent structures, one must experience their aura firsthand. If you want to witness the splendor of the Mughals, visiting Fatehpur Sikri is an absolute must during your Taj Mahal tour in Agra.
