About Nathdwara

Nathdwara is a small town located on the banks of Banas River in Rajsamand district of Rajasthan, India and it is 50 km north east of the city of lakes, Udaipur. Nathdwara literally means Gateway to Shrinathji. This town got fame due to the 14th century temple of Lord Krishna out here that houses the idol of Srinathji in the form of 7 year old infant incarnation of Lord Krishna. Thousands of tourists and devotes flock this place round the year.

Shrinath ji Temple, Nathdwara

Nathdwara literally means pathway to Shrinath Ji and town itself is also referred to as Shrinath Ji after the presiding deity. The idol is said to have been transferred from its original worshipping place near Mathura to this place in order to protect it from anti Hindu extremist agnostic Islamic policies of Mughal ruler Aurangjeb. Shrinath Ji temple is also popularly known as Haveli of Shrinath Ji built in 17th Century makes a significant Vaishnavite shrine.

There is a local story behind its establishment that when the idol was being transported by Chariot from its original place of worship near Mathura to the safer place in 1672. En-route, one of the wheels of the chariot got into deep mud and could not be moved any further after several efforts. Accompanying priest realized that this spot was picked by the lord himself and enshrined the idol here.

The idol is carved out of a large black stone. Lord Shrinathji symbolizes a form of 7 year old Lord Krishna, when he lifted the ‘Govardhana’ (a hill). Janmashtmi is one of the major festivals of this temple hwen people come in large number to get the blessings of Lord Shrinath Ji.

After completing the visit of Shrinath Ji temple, proceed towards Eklingji, which is 28 km from Nathdwara.

Eklingji & Nagda Day Trip

The popular town at a distance of 20 odd km from Udaipur and 28 km from Nathdwara, is famous for temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The place got its name from the Eklingji temple in Rajasthan. The temple was initially built in 734 AD by Bappa Rawal. Eklingji is said to be the rulling deity of Mewar Princely state. The Lord Shiva four faced black marble image is seen under a pyramidal roof of double story decorated pillared hall. The walled temple complex includes 108 temples within its high walls. The main temple dates back to 15th century had been re-built from an earlier destroyed temple. There are many other significant temples in the complex to watch out for. A Lakulish temple date back to 971 is the only temple of Lakulish sect in entire India.

Eklingi Temple Timings :
Morning time:

4.30 am to 7.00 am and 10.30 am to 1.30 pm

Evening time:

5.00 pm to 7.30 pm

Nagda Temples :

You will have a stop on way back in a place called Nagda at a distance of just 01 km away from Eklingji. Nagda is famous for its 10th century temple called Sas Bahu temple that literally means Mother in law and Daughter in law respectively. The temple is dedicated to lord Vishnu and renowed for its exquisite stone carvings.

After completing the sightseeing of Eklingji and Nagda, drive to Udaipur.
