Day trip to Gangasagar

KOLKATA – GANGASAGAR

Pick up from your hotel in Kolkata and drive towards Sagar Island, which is about 135 km south of Kolkata. Gangasagar can not be reached by surface directly as one has to break the journey and take ferry to reach the main land of Gangasagar by crossing Muriganga river. It will take 3 to 4 hours to reach.

FERRY RIDE (40 MIN)

Arrives at Harwood point jetty to take Ferry at Kakdwip, which is about 80 km from Kolkata. Vehicles can not go further. You will be dropped at Harwood point jetty in Kakdwip. On arrival at Kakdwip, board a local ferry to the other side of the river at Kochuberia, a journey of approximately 30 to 40 minutes.

DISEMBARK

Arrives at Kachuberia jetty point on Sagar Island. Disembark here, you are met and drive towards Gangasagar. It will take another 40 minute drive to take you to the Gangasagar.

Gangasagar is an Island located in the confluence of River Ganges and Bay of Bengal Sea near Sundarbans. You will be taken to this place by surface transport and by ferry through Muriganga River. Gangasagar is a significant place of Hindu pilgrimage.

Gangasagar Island is also known as Sagardwip. It is one of the most important pilgrimage centers for Hindus in India and a magnificent spot for adventure lovers too. It also appeals the bird watchers and beach lovers.

The most important tourist attractions of all in Gangasagr are Kapil Muni temple, dedicated to Hindu sage Kapil Muni. It is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in this Island. Thousands of devotees from all across the country flock at Gangasagar on the auspicious occasion of Makar Sankranti every year (Mid- January) to offer prayers and take holy dip at the confluence of river Ganages and the Bay of Bengal. After bathing, pilgrims offer prayers at the Kapil Muni Temple or Ashram.

During the day trip to Gangasagar, spend rest of the day exploring other attractions such as several religious sanctuaries that house local philanthropic organizations. Visit Ashrams of Bharat Sevashram Sangha, Ramakrishna Mission and the ashram of Omkarnath. These all are charitable organizations.

Packed lunch is advisable during the day, otherwise you can have lunch as any local restaurants.

The lighthouse at Gangasagar offers a panoramic view of this spectacular beach, from where you can enjoy sunrise and sunset.

 

RETURN FERRY

After your day tour of Gangasagar Island, you will be taken by surface transport to Kachuberia jetty point to take ferry back to Harwood jetty point.
