The Mughal emperor Shah Jahan initiated the construction of this Marble marvel in 1631, and it took 22 years and 20,000 workers to complete it in 1653. The intricate marble work was adorned with precious and semi-precious stones, which were meticulously placed to create a masterpiece. The marble was sourced from Makarna, near Jodhpur in Rajasthan, in the 16th century, and every detail of the monument was carefully planned and executed. The fort is made of red sandstone and was initially known as the walled city. Legend has it that Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan was confined and detained by his son Aurangzeb in the fort, where he spent the last eight years of his life gazing at the Taj Mahal.
