Chilika Lake:
A brackish water lake spreading an area of over 1100 sq.km near Puri in Odisha, Chilika Lake is Asias largest salt water lagoon flowing into the Bay of Bengal attracts thousands of tourist every year to enjoy fishing, bird watching and boating. It has acquired an international recognition as a tourist spot that is the second largest lagoon in the world. It is home to an impressive array of bird life, both native and migrant, makes Chilika one of the best places in India for bird-watching, splashing around in the water and quiet relaxation. One can also enjoy the diverse range of aquatic life including more than 200 species of fish and Irrawaddy dolphin. Migratory birds come here in winters all the way from Siberia and stay here till March. Cruise through the Chilika Lake is must do activity there.
Places to see in Chilika
Kalijai Island
The island of Kalijai is famous for its religious significance. Temple dedicated to Goddess Kalijai is located here that is worshipped by Hindu devotees. Temple is visited by large numbers of pilgrims at Makar fair in January during Makar Sankranti.
Nalabana
Nalaban is a bird sanctuary located within the lake makes this place a treat for bird watchers coming here from all across the globe. It is recognized as a bird sanctuary under the Wildlife Protection Act.
Honeymoon Island, Breakfast Island, Birds Island, Parikud Island, etc. are some of the important and interesting spots inside the lake.
Best time to visit Chilika Lake
The best time to visit Chilika is in the winter months, when migratory birds arrive there. Water sports activities like boat, water scooters and pedal boats are available on hire at Barkul and Rambha.
