The city is named after Mahatma Gandhi, lies on the bank of River Sabarmati at a distance of 23 km from Ahmedabad. It is referred as a prime center of learning in Gujarat. It is one of the best day trips from Ahmedabad to offer to day trippers. Tourist Attractions of Gandhinagar

Akshardham Temple

Akshardham temple is one of the most renowned temples in Gujarat. Akshardham temple in Gandhinagar is located just 2 km away from the main city, which is dedicated to Lord Swaminarayan. It was built by Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS). The BAPS was conceived by Shastriji Maharaj in 1907 and was inaugurated on November 2, 1992.

Six thousand tones of pink sandstone were used in building the monument by nearly 1000 artisans. Intricately carved monument stands amid sprawling gardens, lawns, trees and fountains. The temple was in the news for wrong reasons as it had been attacked in September 2002.

The 7 feet high, gold leafed statue of Lord Swaminarayan is set amidst the complex. The structure measures 108 feet (33 m) in height, 240 feet (73 m) in length and 131 feet (40 m) in width. The portico around the temple is 1,751 feet (534 m) in length. This temple has over 100 pillars, balconies, a podium and around 17 domes. The entire temple features more than two hundred windows. One can also find some marble idols of Lord Swaminarayans successors in central hall.

Capital Complex

The Capital Complex is massive monumental building which is centrally located in Sector 10, Gandhinagar. It houses many significant offices such as Secretariat, the Legislative Assembly, the High Court and various offices of Heads of the Departments. A domed building on a podium in the middle of the lake inside, the campus is known as the Vithalbhai Patel Bhavan which houses the Vidhan Sabha and the legislature office.

Sardar Bhavan and Narmada Bhavan, two magnificent buildings are linked by corridors on the either side of the Vithalbhai Patel Bhavan. Sardar Bhavan, consisting of several departments of state secretariat while Narmada Bhavan houses the offices of the Head of the departments.

Craftsmen’s Village

As name suggests, this place is home to craftsmen belong to Gujjar Suthar cast, located merely 7 km from Gandhinagar in the village of Pethapur. The village is situated on the banks of Sabarmati River and known for its Bandhani Sarees. One can still see craftsmen making Bandhani sarees using tools like handmade wooden printing blocks with tying and dyeing of pieces of cotton or silk cloth. The common features of Bandhani sarees are dots, squares, waves and strips. These beautifully carved wooden printing blocks are also being exported to some Indian states and other countries too.

Adalaj Step Well

Built in 1499 by Muslim ruler, Queen Rudabai, The Adalaj Wav Step Well is presently located 18 kilometers north of Ahmedabad. It is an architectural marvel, which is 5 storied deep. Though now dry, the well once provided water to weary travelers and pilgrims. The step well is renowned for its unique architecture with a huge artistic edifice and a flight of steps that takes you a whopping five storeys down.

Children’s Park, Gandhinagar

Moving on to another attraction of Gandhinagar, the Childrens Park, which is located in the Sector 28. It attracts not only tourists but also locals who visit oftenly to relax and enjoy amusement facilities out here. The Park offers some attractive features such as boat riding on a lake within the park and minitrain making it more fascinating amongst children.

Sarita Udyan

Sarita literally means River and Udyan refers to garden, Sarita Udyan is one of the famous picnic spot at sector 9 in Gandhinagar. This beautiful garden is located on the bank of River Sabarmati. There is a popular deer park nearby making this place more attractive for visitors.
